History of General Education
General education emerged from classical traditions of rhetoric, logic, and moral philosophy. American colleges adapted these ideals through distribution requirements, core curricula, and — today — competency-based frameworks.
Origins and the Liberal Arts Tradition
General education in American higher education traces to colonial college curricula rooted in Latin, Greek, mathematics, and moral philosophy. The goal was to prepare citizens and leaders with shared intellectual foundations rather than narrow vocational training.
The 1945 Harvard Redbook report, General Education in a Free Society, catalyzed nationwide reform. It argued that democracy required educated citizens capable of critical thinking — a vision that shaped distribution requirements still visible in Michigan institutions today.
Land-Grant and Michigan Expansion
The Morrill Act of 1862 expanded access through land-grant universities including Michigan State University. Land-grant missions blended practical agriculture and engineering with liberal education, creating tension and innovation in general education design.
The University of Michigan, founded in 1817, developed one of the nation's most comprehensive general education programs through the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts — influencing peer institutions across the Midwest.
