Overview

Ferris State University's general education program evolved from vocational institute foundations into a competency-based framework that connects liberal learning with career preparation. The 2017 comprehensive revision remains the defining modern structure.

Philosophy

General education at Ferris develops communication, quantitative reasoning, ethical judgment, and cultural awareness as foundations for professional excellence and lifelong learning.

Governance

The General Education Committee, reporting to Academic Affairs, oversees curriculum proposals, competency assessment, and MTA alignment. Subcommittees review course attribute assignments annually.
